Sirius Black and Remus Lupin

Sirius and Remus are two of my favorite characters in the Harry Potter series, and their relationship is fascinating. They have a long history with each other, but it's not all sunshine and daisies.

Sirius and Remus met at Hogwarts when the two were both sorted into Gryffindor. Sirius and Remus, along with James Potter and Peter Pettigrew become good friends. Sirius, James and Peter figured out that Remus was a werewolf, and rather than shuning him, they looked for a way to help him during his transformations. They became Animagi, and transformed into a dog, stag and rat. This tightened their friendship, and the four became the Marauders, and created the Marauder's Map. James and Sirius were two of the most popular students in school, but also the two who created the most mischief. We don't know much about the friendship between Remus and Sirius while they were at school, but we do know a few things.

Remus tended to look the other way when Sirius and James were picking on Severus Snape, even though Remus was a prefect. Remus did not want to betray his friends, even if he thought they crossed the line. Another important moment in Remus and Sirius' past, is Sirius telling Severus Snape that Remus was a werewolf. Sirius told Snape how to get to where Remus was kept during his transformations, and Snape went to the Shack during the full moon. Snape was saved before he was bitten by James, but this created a huge rift between Snape and the Marauders. But what we don't know is how Remus reacted to Sirius' "prank". We can only guess how Remus reacted, but it's an important moment in their history.

After leaving Hogwarts, they continued to stay close as friends. However, as the war got worse, Remus and Sirius began to distrust one another. We don't really know how their close friendship spiraled to the point to create that much distrust between them. However, it does make sense that Sirius would trust James fully (since they were like brothers). Remus was most likely more isolated from the rest of the Marauders (probably while he was working with the werewolves), and this created a rift between the friends. When Peter betrays James and Lily to Voldemort, Sirius goes after him. Unfortuatly, Peter fakes his own death, and Sirius is thrown into Azkaban and blamed for the death's of Lily, James and Peter. Remus believes Sirius is guilty, and continues to believe this for 13 years.

Sirius escapes from Azkaban, when he discovers that Peter is alive and well, and pretending to be a pet rat. At the same time, Remus is hired by Dumbledore as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, and he comes to Hogwarts. We do learn a little bit about Remus and Sirius' history. Remus is obviously hurt by this betrayal of not only himself, but of James and Lily. However, Remus discovers Peter is still alive when he sees Peter on the Map. Remus goes to the Shack, where Sirius is with Peter, Harry, Ron and Hermoine. Remus and Sirius reunite for the first time, and Remus immediatly embraces Sirius, and believes Sirius to be innocent.

Of course, in the Harry Potter series, nothing ever turns out the way we wish it would. The series of events that follows causes the return of Voldemort, and the death of Sirius. Peter escapes, and Sirius cannot prove to anyone that Peter is still alive. He escapes the Ministry, and is on the run for almost a year before Voldemort returns. Remus is forced to leave Hogwarts after his werewolf status is revieled to all the students. We have no idea if Remus and Sirius kept in touch during that year, but when Voldemort returns, Dumbledore instructs Sirius to "lay low at Lupins".

Sirius gives his childhood home to the Order, and he moves back into the Black house. Sirius is forced to stay at home, but Remus is often out helping Harry. This probably gave Sirius some sort of peace of mind to know that his closest friend was there for his godson. Sirius and Remus fight together at the Department of Mistry's, where Sirius meets his downfall. Remus is devestated, since he has now lost all of his friends. It's all very depressing and sad:(
